Musique in Moscou by Anna Pavlikovskaya : Moscow music life is in full swing in spite of the severe and record-breaking frost, wind and snowfall!

F Sharp? Or G Flat? Oh, yes, please, both of them!

Moscow music life is in full swing in spite of the severe and record-breaking frost, wind and snowfall! There is no stopping us. We spent too much time at home and now we don’t want to miss even a single moment!

It’s good that now Moscow museums, exhibition halls and theaters are open. And they can work even up to a 50% capacity! There’s yet the other half to go to one hundred, but it’s already a lot!

February was noted for the first night of the musical performance “A Date in Moscow” staged in the Gorky Academic Drama Theatre in Moscow within the framework of Yuri Bashmet’s Second International Winter Festival of Arts.

The musical united the choir, the dancers and the orchestra conducted by maestro Bashmet himself. And the Gorky Academic Drama Theatre of Moscow even opened for this first night its orchestra pit, which (according to the theatre’s artistic director Edward Boyakov) had been hidden under the first three rows of the stalls for 30 years!

The performance is based on the romantic story of a girl arriving in Moscow from a small provincial town to enter university. Of course, she is in for difficulties and a hard choice, not only of the university, but also of the love of her life, of course. But everything turns out all right and the end is happy. A mystery, however, is the time when the action takes place. The costumes and hairstyles refer us to the 60ies of the 20th century and even to earlier times. At the same time we can see elements of modern everyday life and hear modern slang. The performance director Pavel Safonov may be hinting that this story could have happened in Moscow at any moment of time.

– What could be of interest to the French theatre-goers? – I ask the composer Alexander Tchaikovsky.

– It’s love, they’ll see real love here, – Alexander replies.

– Of course! Who knows love better?..

…And if you want to close your eyes and submerge into music, to link the sounds with your own words and associations…then attend the concerts brilliantly performed in the catholic Cathedral of the Conception of Virgin Mary in Malaya Gruzinskaya Street in Moscow. The organ, the cello, the violin. Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Handel. Fantastic acoustics, performance and atmosphere!

I can still hear “The Four Seasons” by Vivaldi…
