Anna Pavlikovskaya – a.pavlikovskaya@me.com

PRAY AND LEARN?!

The Patriarch’s Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ or the Main Cathedral of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was opened on the territory of the “Patriot” park 55 km from Moscow in the summer of 2020.

The construction had taken 1,5 years from September 2018 till May 2020.

Inside the cathedral and on its facades there is an exhibition devoted to the history of the establishment of the Russian State and its armed forces as well as to Russian people’s heroic deeds during different wars.

What still remains a subject of heated discussions is the fact that the same building combines in itself both a cathedral and a history museum with an architectural mix of Russian, Byzantine, retro and postmodernist styles.

“It’s best to have a look with my own eyes,” I thought and went there to understand things better.

Indeed inside the cathedral and on its facades there are icons alongside battle scenes depictions, episodes from military history and biblical texts. The lower part of the cathedral is finished with ceramics, mosaics, decorated with gold plating and traditional blue-and-white Gzhel-style ornaments. In the upper part you can see the faces of Jesus Christ and other saints as well as stained glass windows with military medals awarded to heroes at different stages of Russian history.

The idea of combining history and religion in one building causes contradictory feelings.

On the one hand it’s a temple – a place to purify and pacify your soul, a place of religious services and sacraments. On the other hand it’s a history museum – a place to collect, store and exhibit historically important objects, a place to learn something new, go on excursions, meet with friends.

So, what are we supposed to do there – to pray or to learn?

I still don’t know!

I’ve seen it, but I haven’t worked it out yet…
